Ask anyone with a TV about their streaming habits and you’re sure to get an earful. But have you really looked into how these devices work? Roku is a streaming media player that offers more than 500,000 movies and television episodes, along with Live content. With such devices, we can stream to our TVs through the Internet. Want to know more?
Just connect the Roku Streaming Stick+ to your high-definition television, and start watching. It is a simple, affordable way to stream free movies and shows from the Internet to your television set. The streaming stick/player uses an incredibly easy-to-use interface so you can enjoy a wide variety of streaming services on one device!
Roku is a type of device that plugs into the back of your TV and allows you to stream content from the Internet onto your TV. This content includes, but is not limited to, Netflix, Hulu, Amazon Prime Video, and SlingTV. Increasingly in recent years, cable companies such as Time-Warner have begun offering a Roku “Channel” that allows subscribers to log into their cable account, essentially expanding the number of channels on their cable network to include things like ESPN, SYFY Channel, MTV Classic, or live news channels.
Roku has become one of the largest – if not THE largest – streamer device manufacturer. The streaming player makes it easy to find new content, either through its own offerings or by suggesting titles from various streaming services. Here’s a great breakdown of which model will work best for you based on your viewing habits.
Streaming video can be an expensive hobby if you’re not careful. Some models support 4K or HDR (High Dynamic Range) video, while others do not. And the prices can vary greatly. We looked at all of the models in the Roku line-up to determine which ones can stream Dolby Vision and HDR10+ content, which are color spaces with more rich picture detail than standard HDR. We will also mention their various features and prices to determine whether any represent a good value.
It is the top of the line in Roku’s product line. It features 4k playback, HDR10 and Dolby vision support, an ethernet port for more reliable Netflix streaming, and a USB port for local media file playback. The Roku Ultra is one of the most well-equipped media streamers you can buy. It’s about $69.99, but well worth it for 4K HDR10+ and Dolby Vision support.
Our suggestion, the Roku Ultra is the smartest, fastest, most powerful streaming device in the house. It comes equipped with an Ethernet port and has a USB port for local media playback.
Roku Express 4K+ is a better choice for someone who wants those features we mentioned above but doesn’t care as much about performance, since it’ll cost around $40. If you have an older TV that only supports HDR10 or no HDR at all, stick with the Express. You may also want to save some money if you’re not 100% sure you need the extra features.
Roku is rounding out its entry-level (Cheap) streamer lineup with a new member, the Roku Express 4K. The $30 streaming device touts the same quad-core processor offered by the Roku Premiere+ and Roku Ultra but lacks support for HDR alongside the latter on 4K TVs. On the topic of picture quality, it is par for the course in this price range with 1080p resolution and a 60Hz refresh rate. It also supports Dolby Digital decoding through HDMI, which is an upgrade over the older devices in this range. As Roku Express 4K+ costs $39.99, Roku Express will cost you $29.99.
Streaming is of utmost importance for many people in this day and age, and the basics are pretty much understood by all. The problem with streaming is that, while quality has improved drastically over the years, there isn’t much you can do with it apart from “stream stuff”. Enter Roku Streaming Stick 4K. The new Roku Streaming Stick 4K is an upgraded version of the previous Roku Streaming Stick Plus and supports an upgraded CPU and RAM as well as a new HDMI connection (HDMI 2.0b). If you’re looking to stream in ultra-high-definition, it’s safe to say that you can’t get more bang for your buck than with the Streaming Stick 4K. The best part is, you can get it for $59.99 only!
NOTE: The prices shown above are the average retail price.
